Winter 2011 Newletter
The winter season is upon us and the snow will soon be flying. Here are a few reminders :
· Keep your sidewalks free of snow and ice- this is the responsibility of the property owner.
· During snow removal, do not park, abandon, or leave your vehicle unattended on any street or alley until the street has been plowed curb to curb. Violators will be ticketed $25 per offense.
· Do not shovel, move, or plow snow onto city streets outside of the downtown area.
· Drive carefully, obey posted speed limits, and adjust your speed according to the current conditions.
Open Burning
Due to extremely dry conditions, Dickinson County has placed a ban on all outdoor burning until further notice.
Garbage Collection
Residential garbage collection is every Monday. Please have all garbage in blue city bags placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. If you forget to set your trash bags out, you may take them up to the public works grounds located near the intersection of 17th St. and M Ave. Bags may be purchased at the City Clerk’s Office and Buy Rite Foods.
All regular household garbage must be placed in blue city bags. Tags for appliances, electronics, furniture, and other non-regular household garbage may be purchased at the City Clerk’s Office.
Dumpsters
Dumpsters may be rented from the City of Milford for household related garbage. A contract is required. For questions and rates contact the City Clerk’s Office. No construction, building materials, or demolition debris is allowed. Dumpsters for such waste may be rented from Town & Country at 712-472-2493.
Recycling
Residential curbside recycling is the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month. Plastics with symbols 1-7 are now being accepted. All items must be separated. For more details visit www.milford.ia.us and click FAQ.
Recyclable items may also be taken to the City’s recycling bins at the public works grounds located near the intersection of 17th St. and M Ave.
Dickinson County Recycling Center
Non-household garbage items (ie- electronics, tires, appliances, etc.) and household hazardous materials may also be taken to the Dickinson County Recycling Center, located on Highway A-34 ½ mile east of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. For more information contact 338-2549 or visit www.dickinsonrecycling.com
Pets
All pets, especially dogs, must be contained on their property at all times. When walking animals, they must be on a leash. All animals must be in a secure location away from electric, gas, and water meters. This will assure your meters are read properly.
Owners are also required to clean up after their pets and keep them on a leash. “Dogi Stations” have also been placed around city parks to help you clean up after your pet. Always remember to be courteous of your neighbors.
Sewer Backups
To prevent sewer backups, people are urged to flush only toilet paper down the toilet. Garbage, grease, rags, and other solid waste items can cause sewer backups and increased strain on the City’s lift stations and sewer collection system.
Upcoming Major Street Projects
P Ave.- The City Council has begun the process of making preparations for a 4 inch asphalt overlay on P Ave. from 21st to 28th St. and additional drain tile in select areas this spring. The pavement is anticipated to have a 6-8 year life expectancy. After this time the plan is to put in a regular street with curb and gutter and upsize the storm sewer system in this area. It is also in the long term plan to make similar improvements to P Ave. from 13th St. to 21st St.
L Ave. Sewer line replacement and street reconstruction from 6th St. to 7th St. is scheduled for Spring/Summer 2011.
